LIGHT AT THE END OF THE TUNNEL

  Cost Unknown Competition Commended

Our response to this competition brief was to integrate the ‘blocks’ which exist as a result of routes through the viaduct into the urban fabric by lining them so that they visually take the scale of a city block. This strategy is loose enough to be applied to the entire viaduct whilst leaving each part free to respond to its surroundings. The lining element is a pneumatically supported ETFE responsive skin, which modifies internal environments and contributes to external environment. The proposal is based on existing models for studio spaces such as the Tea Building and Westbourne Studio, which are commercially viable developments that also support wider public and cultural activities.
