PROTOTYPE BIRD BOX

Our proposal for Britain’s Best Birdbox competition entry (awarded runner-up) aims to enhance the observer’s understanding of the activity of a nesting bird through colour. It has a distinctive elongated egg-shaped appearance and is made from injection moulded polypropylene impregnated with thermo-chromic ink. The thermo-chromic ink technology enables the birdbox to literally change colour as the level of habitation within the birdbox changes, according to the nesting patterns of the birds. The changing surface colour is an indicator for activity, but also provides the potential for an abstract visual display, wholly derived from the incidental activity of nature to the benefit of the observer.
